1.A river named the Huliu River flows without break in the County of Guangling, on the north foot of the Mount Heng. Here the climate is unique and the land is fertile, thus a special millet, with the sticky and fragrant texture and in the color golden yellow, has been produced in the long history.

　　2.In the Xuande Period (1426-1436), Wang Shangwen, a Guangling native, got the main position of the Revenue Department, he was born poor and had nothing special to pay tribut to the emperor, so he later selected the “white grain millet” of his hometown and contributed it to the emperor. After tasting the cooked millet rice, the emperor was fairly satisfied with it and requested the county to contribute the millet every year. In the Tumu War (in 1449), Mr. Wang Shanwen was captured by the enemy in order to protect the Emperor Yingzong who was retreating from the west of Guangling, the enemy lured him into surrender, but he would die rather than surrender. Later, he was killed by the enemy. So, he was honored as “the Wen Tianxiang of the Ming Dynesty”(meaning a national hero).

　　3. In the Qing Dynesty, the Emperor Kangxi Kangxi Emperor toured to Mount Wutai in autumn, by way of Guangling, where he made an inspection to the farmland at Dongfu in the early morning. After he came back from outside, he caught a light cold and coughed slightly. After taking medicin, he didn’t feel a bit better yet. One chamberlain served the porridge cooked with “white grain” rice urgently. After eating the porridge, the emperor recovered immediately. At that time, the sun was rising in the east, then he wrote a poem with pleasure.

　　The chamberlains were so clever that they smelled something from the emperor’s poet, so afterwards the millet was named Dongfangliang(Oriental Brightness). 

　　4.The millet “Dongfangliang” (“Oriental Brightness”) made great contributions to the Chinese triumphs in the anti-Janpese War and the War of Liberation, led by CPC under the hard fighting condition of “ millet plus rifles”. 

　　5. in 1957, Liu Qing, a local party secretary of CPC, was received by Chairman Mao when he attended the national conference of “Labor Examples”, and he sent a bag of “Dongfangliang” millet to Chairman Mao, which reminded the leader of the hard times of “millet plus rifles”. And because the name of the millet was similar to the ode’s name “Dongfanghong” (glorifying Chairman Mao and his exploits) , it was highly praised by the leaders who lived in Zhongnanhai.

　　6. In 1973, Premier Zhou Enlai accompanied French then-president Georges Pompido, who was born in Datong, to visit Datong. When they enjoyed the millet porridge as the night snack, he suddenly asked Premier Zhou about the “Dongfangliang” millet, and he told Premier Zhou that when his father did missionary work, he often ate porridge cooked with “Dongfangliang” and praised it highly. 

　　7. In the past 600 years or so, the millet “Dongfangliang” has been well-known in the north China as a delicious food, it is especially good to the newly-producing mothers and those with stomach problems.

　　8. Now, the “Dongfangliang”millet is regarded as a decent present and a top specialty.  It helps to pursue an elegant life.
